Sunrise Family Resource Center purchases historic Manes House

BENNINGTON — Sunrise Family Resource Center has expanded its footprint on Union Street with the purchase of the historic Manes House at 127 Union St., positioning the organization to broaden services and meet growing community needs.

The property, acquired in June 2025, marks a significant step for Sunrise Family Resource Center as it looks to increase capacity and introduce new programming.

“We had truly outgrown our current spaces further up on Union Street,” said Executive Director Denise Main. “We need room not only to serve more families, but to better fulfill our vision.”

That vision includes expanding access beyond at-risk and low-income families while maintaining those core services. The new location will allow Sunrise Family Resources to offer additional on-site programs and address service gaps in the region.

“Manes House will allow us to do just that,” Main said. “We’ll be able to offer more on-site programs and fill important gaps — like providing birthing classes, which are currently in high demand but unavailable in our area.”

The organization plans to partner with the Vermont Department of Health to offer those classes, supported by three trained doulas on staff.

The expansion will also provide space for staff offices, community partner meetings, volunteer opportunities and parent led programming.

The Manes House has historically operated as a small assisted living residence licensed for six residents, focused on providing a safe, home-like environment for elderly individuals.

Project leaders emphasized that preserving the building’s historic character remains a priority.

“The house itself is beautiful, and we are committed to preserving its character — highlighting original features like the windows and restoring the clapboard siding,” Main said.

Kelly Clark Harrington of Centerline Architects is overseeing the restoration effort, describing the Manes House as a significant historic structure that will receive careful attention throughout the renovation process.

Sunrise Family Resources plans to offer tours and host a public open house once the facility is fully operational.
